Karaoke DJs
Professional Karaoke
Karaoke DJs are professional disc jockeys who specialize in Karaoke music – they’ll have a great selection of music and equipment and they’ll probably be able to put on a mean performance on their own!
Originally a Japanese phenomenon, Karaoke is quickly becoming one of the most popular forms of entertainment in North America. The professional disc jockey field caught onto this trend easily and you can now find a number of different services that’ll provide you with equipment, music and a great entertainer who’ll keep the evening moving. Most Karaoke DJs are also regular DJs as well, and will be able to play popular recorded music once everyone is all sung out.
What to Look for in a Karaoke DJ
When you’re putting together a large event like a wedding, anniversary or birthday party, you want your entertainment to be reliable and exciting. The worst parties are typically a result of bad music or an annoying DJ. There are several things you’ll want to keep in mind when you’re selecting a Karaoke DJ to host your event for you:
- Song Selection: There’s likely to be a number of different musical tastes found at any large gathering and you want to make sure that your Karaoke DJ can cater to all of them. Make sure that the DJ has at least a few choices between country, top 40, oldies, urban and rock tunes. Although many DJs will market themselves as genre specific (for example, as a country music DJ) and you might even select them based on that fact, you’ll still want the service to come with a few choices. When it comes to a Karaoke DJ, you also want to make sure that there are different ranges available for the sing along songs: some male and female vocalists; perhaps some duets; some low and high key songs; and different available tempos and ranges. There’ll be a wide range of talents between your guests and you want to make sure everyone gets a chance to show their stuff!
- Technical Ability: Does the DJ know how to avoid feedback from the microphones? Does he or she have some tricks up their sleeve as to how to make your guests sound better? How long does it take the DJ to set up and tear down equipment? How long does the DJ take to cue up music? The technical abilities of your karaoke DJ will determine how smoothly your evening will run. You don’t want your guests waiting five minutes in between each song because the DJ can’t find the disc or can’t get the song loaded onto the equipment. You also don’t want to spend all night waiting for your DJ to clear out after the party has ended! When you’re choosing a Karaoke DJ, look for recommendations. Even better, try to get yourself into one of the DJ’s events to see for yourself how things are run.
- Personality: Your Karaoke DJ is basically going to be the host of your show. That means that the DJ is responsible for more than just taking requests and spinning records. A good DJ has a show prepared – they might even put on a few performances themselves to get everyone in the mood for some Karaoke! While you don’t want your DJ to be overwhelming (or worse, obnoxious!) you do want someone who will interact with your guests, be easy to talk to and be able to keep the night moving. A great Karaoke DJ needs to be able to deal with lulls in the action, as well as busy times when absolutely everyone at the party is looking for a request.
