Karaoke Bars
Taking your show on the road
So it’s Saturday night and you’ve got the urge to sing – a Karaoke bar is just the place for you! While many bars will have a night where they pull out the microphone and let everyone have a chance at belting out their favorite tunes, there are a number of bars and clubs dedicated only to the Karaoke show.
Often these bars will have a dedicated group of regulars who like to practice their vocal stylings with each other, but it’s not difficult to break into the scene. Karaoke lovers are always looking for new talent to join the show so that everyone gets a chance to enjoy both performing and listening to music.
The First Karaoke Bar
In Japan, the birthplace of Karaoke, there’s a popular type of club called a Karaoke box. They’re usually small or medium sized rooms (or compartments) filled with Karaoke equipment that can be rented for a certain amount of time by a group. This makes the performances a little less public and also allows for more people to participate because each group has their own space and their own equipment.
Some Chinese establishments will try to cater to both the young and the old with lounges that feature traditional Chinese games, such as mahjong, as well as Karaoke equipment. The younger patrons can compete against each other in Karaoke contests while the older groups can socialize over a game.
North American Karaoke Bars
In the United States and Canada, a Karaoke bar is simply a bar or lounge that allows patrons to sing with Karaoke equipment. A bar that’s dedicated to Karaoke on a full time basis will usually have excellent equipment and a wide variety of music and accessories to choose from. They may also run ongoing competitions that allow patrons to battle against each other to rule the microphone.
The most popular bars tend to be quite busy. They’ve invested a lot of money in the equipment and accessories required to put on a great show and patrons might have to sign up for a waiting list to get onstage (sometimes called ‘rotation’).
Most of the time it’s free to participate in the show. The bars and clubs make their money from the food and drinks that are purchased throughout the evening. You may find that some smaller establishments charge a small fee to sing, though. These are usually places that don’t hold a lot of people and are concerned over the fact that singers may take up a lot of space for an extended period of time.
Whether you’re looking to sing along to your favorite music, meet some new people or join in a contest, a Karaoke bar is a great place to be seen.
