About Karaoke
Calling all rock stars
Karaoke is a Japanese word that literally translates into “empty orchestra”. The term was used to market performances where pre-recorded music stood in for a live band.
Today, Karaoke is known as a lively hobby that originated in Japan and quickly spread throughout the world starting in the 1980s. As it has developed into a worldwide phenomenon, the technology has advanced so today amateur singers can croon away to their favorite songs at Karaoke clubs or at home.
History
Music is a common Japanese entertainment and dancing and singing have always been popular at get togethers. In 1970, singer Daisuke Inoue made the first Karaoke machine. It was simply a tape recorder that played a song for others to sing along with. He rented the machines out and the trend picked up in restaurants and hotels.
As Karaoke became more popular, clubs called Karaoke boxes started opening up. Karaoke boxes provide small rooms for individual groups to spend some time singing along to their favorite music. There’s often a restaurant or bar, as well as other entertainment services like music video screening, found in the same place.
Innovation
Technology has helped make Karaoke a more interesting and professional sounding activity. Early machines worked on cassettes, which then changed to CDs, then DVDs and currently digital music is revolutionizing the way the systems run.
Starting in the 1980s, Karaoke began to spread across Asia and Europe. The 1990s brought the trend to North America and now people of almost all cultures and languages have joined the show. As more people become interested in performing, the professional Karaoke systems are becoming more advanced. Many include lights and sound effects in their shows and large screens and dance floors are making it a real crowd activity.
The internet has also added a new dimension to the Karaoke scene. Online Karaoke is one of the most common ways people stretch their vocal chords these days – you don’t even have to leave your living room to belt out a tune and share your performances with other singers.
Not Just a Party
As Karaoke became popular in North America it was associated with bar nights – everyone had to down a little ‘liquid courage’ before they’d step on stage! This left it with a bad rap and people assumed that it was just something that entertained all the intoxicated people at the party.
This is an unfortunate generalization because Karaoke is a great way for people to test their talents and share a passion with others. There are lots of Karaoke clubs and communities that get together (sans liquor) to belt out all their favorite tunes and even compete for the title of best singer. There’s a ton of music available so Karaoke can be enjoyed by people with all different kinds of musical tastes and the technology has made it so that it’s quite accessible to all people.
